Upper Mustang Trekking is a restricted area trekking and leads to the capital of Upper Mustang, Lo-Manthang, which is the most remarkable destination in the trek to Upper Mustang. Upper Mustang was restricted for foreigners until 1990s because of its strategic location on the Tibetan boarder, so it is also known as Forbidden Kingdom. You will get special permit to enter this area and the permit is valid for 10 days only and each additional days cost extra money. Lo Manthang is a small kingdom where you can still find the king.
The journey begins from early morning flight to Jomsom from Pokhara. The trail leads to Ekali Bhatti and walking through rivers we reach Kagbeni. A three hours long trek takes us to the small village of Samar then we again trek to Syangboche. Trek uphill takes us to Yamda La. Crossing the GhyamiKhola the trail takes us to the village of Charang. Finally we reach Lo Manthang from where the view of Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I and Bhrikuti peak is incredible. The diverse range of flora and fauna, bushy plants make the trip fantastic.

Early morning we drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara in the tourist vehicle. The 6-7 hours drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara gives us scenic pleasure of terraced farmland and countryside. Following the Trishuli and Marshyangdi River, we reach Pokhara. Overnight in Pokhara
Early in morning, we will fly between the snow covered peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri to Jomsom. It is a district centre of the Mustang region. From Jomsom we will start our Upper Mustang trek to Kagbeni. This is the main gate to Upper Mustang, situated at an altitude of 2,800m. There is still a checkpoint to control the groups departing for Muktinath and Mustang. Overnight at Kagbeni
After breakfast, we start our trekking to the Upper Mustang region with a restricted area permit. The trail takes us to the east bank of the Kaligandaki River. We traverse several ridges to Tangbe village. Beyond Tangbe we will reach Chhusang village after about 1-½-hrs walking. We leave the Kali Gandaki valley and climb steeply up a rocky gully to Chele. Today we will ascend the treeless, waterless terrain, along the side of a spectacular steep canyon to a pass a rock cairn at 3540m. The trail then makes a long gradual descent to Samar village. We’ll climb up above Samar to a ridge and descend into a large gorge. The trail continues through another valley field, crosses a stream and climbs up to a ridge at 3800m. The route traverses another pass, follows a ridge and descends to Shyangmochen. From here, we gently climb to a pass at 3770m and descend into Geling Village. Overnight at Geling
From Geling, the trail climbs gently up to the NYI La pass and descends below the blue, gray and red cliffs. We cross over the steel bridge of the Tangmar Chu River and arrive at the longest Mani wall in Mustang. We climb over another pass at 3,600 m and start the long gentle descent to Charang village. Overnight at Charang
The trail first descends to Charang Chu Canyon and then climbs steeply after crossing the river. Further the trail ascends gently to the 3,850m windy pass of Lo, from where you can see the Lo-Mangthang Valley. It is surrounded by the stone wall and the inhabitants are the Tibetan origins. Today, we explore the surrounding areas. We will hike for two hours to Namgyal Gompa. This is situated on a hilltop and here is an important monastery for the local community. It also supports a local court. After our visit to NamgyalGompa, we continue our tour to Tingkhar. This is the last village to the northwest of Lomanthang with around 40 houses. After visiting both places we will return to Lomanthang. Overnight at Lo-Manthang
Today our trail ascends steadily and offers a last glimpse of Lo Manthang before climbing a ridge at 4070m and continuing to the Chogo La. This is the highest point on our Upper Mustang Trek. The trail then advances to a short, steep descent and crosses the Charang River. We will climb to Lo Geker and arrive at Ghar Gompa, 1200 years old monastery. Next, we trek to Drakmar. Overnight at Drakmar
The trail now descends, passing the stone walls and fields of Drakmar before climbing to a ridge. It further descends to the lower part of Ghami and then to Jaite, dropping again to Chhung-Kah. We continue to Tama Gaon and down to Shyangmochen. Overnight at Shyangbochen
Today we trek all the way down to Chhuksang. We can also take an alternative route to Samar visiting Ranchung Cave. The alternative route is just 30-minutes longer. Overnight at Chhuksang
Today we will follow the stream, pass Chhusang village and make a short steep ascent onto the valley floor. We keep ascending until we reach a small pass from where we can see Muktinath and the red painted Buddhist Monasteries. We ascend for a while and walk through the villages to Muktinath. We can enjoy the terrific view of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Tukuche Himalayan range. Overnight at Muktinath
Today is the last day of our trekking. It is easy walk straight down from Muktinath to Jomsom. While walking down to Jomsom, we can visit the monastery in Jharkot. After one and half hour, we reach to Ekali Bhatti where we can have lunch. On the way to Jomsom, we can see the majestic view of Thorung peak, Thorung La Pass and the caves of Upper Mustang. After breakfast, we fly back to Pokhara from Jomsom. It is 20 minutes flight between the gorge of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. We go to the hotel first, check in there and after a while go out for the city tour. We can visit Davi’s fall, Gupteshwor cave, Tibetan Refugees Camp etc. Finally, we can enjoy an hour boating at Phewa Lake. Overnight at Pokhara
Today we drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu. It takes about 6-7 hours. The drive is unforgettable through villages, terraced fields and the forested hills above the road. More than that, on the way back to Kathmandu, we follow the river and streams, cross many bridges and junctions. Overnight at Kathmandu
